Hey Sniper.
I would say scrap that ram cooler, no point to it.
Also try to price up an i7 920 with DDR3 and a suitable 1366 motherboard, the CPU is cheaper, the ram will be triple channel and should be better I think. _________________

personally i would switch from i5 to i7 using the following:
Asus P6T SE Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard £149.99 inc VAT click me
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £220.99 inc VAT click me
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel £122.99 inc VAT click me
now, ive been using that self same ram & mobo combination for a year now & cannot fault them in any way shape or form, the ram in particular is frankly brilliant, it clocks like scolded cat. & the mobo, well, its had my 920 all the way to 4.2GHz with barely a twitch.
you'll notice the i7 kit comes in at the same price, give or take a couple of quid, as the i5 kit, i know which one ide take. oh & you won't need the corsair ram cooler as the Patriot ram comes with pretty big heatsinks attached, & from persoanl experience runs pretty cool unless your going for a seriously honking big overclock. _________________

hmm i see where your coming from on the feed back but just 1 question.
although the LGA1366 socketed i7 are the fastest chips around as aposed to the LGA1156 isn't the LGA1366 the older variety and set to be replaced by LGA1156 socket? want to make sure i am buying the best gear now that will see me right for the next few years _________________

LGA 1366 has potentially a longer last span ahead of it than LGA 1156, LGA 1366 has the next gen 6 core chips due on it before years end. LGA 1366 will not be going anywhere in at least the next 2 years if not longer. LGA 1156 on the other hand has a question mark over it's longevity, as it's sole purpose was to replace the rapidly ageing LGA 775. LGA 1156 itself was pencilled in to have a 6 to 12 month life span before being be replaced by LGA 1156B. so frankly, if you've got an eye on life spans, the smart money would not be on the current LGA 1156. _________________

something also to bare in mind with regards i5. the CPUs hold the PCI-E controller, so it's impossible to have a 16X-16X Crossfire array, so due to hardware limitations a xfire set up would be running 16X/8X. or 8X/8X. _________________

ok.. thanks vog you sold me on the LGA1366 i7 920 D0 config.
whole build actually comes in at £1001.25
add 88.94 for Windows 7 Home premium complete edition and i am sorted.
Hopefully have it built with in a week depending on delivery. found some fair prices across Amazon/E-buyer and OCuk

On the graphics card i know you say you are going to xfire the 5770 but the best pound for power at the mo is the 5850. They are pretty scarce because of their popularity and the price has crept up in the last couple of months but you get get one for about £220 and once overclocked you get get similar performance to the 5870. Its where the smart money lies. Just have a look at some benches. Its what i will getting once i clear it with the wife.
On the ram. Someone mentioned Patriot. I have had bad experience with Patriot ram and personally wouldnt touch them again coz its a bitch when is goes wrong. |
